CHICKEN SCRATCH
Chicken Scratch is usually worked on gingham check in order to give it the lacy appearance which has made it so popular. Star-like clusters that simulate lace are worked on gingham or gingham-type fabrics. A combination of simple embroidery stitches and a basic needle weaving stitch, when worked on gingham fabric, results in a beautiful lace effect that looks like it took hours to accomplish.
Chicken Scratch, a needle lacemaking art, is a very simple form of the elaborate Spanish lace embroideries of the sixteenth century. Later, because of the striking lace-like appearance of the finished embroidery, it came to be known as Teneriffe Embroidery, named for the Teneriffe Island (Canary Island Chain) where much of its development took place.
